Gamma-butyrolactone (GBL) is a deliquescent, colorless oily liquid with a weak characteristic odor and is soluble in water. Gamma-butyrolactone is a common solvent and reagent in chemistry, and it is also used as a fragrance, detergent, cyanoacrylate remover, paint remover, and as a solvent for some liquid aluminum electrolytic capacitors. In the manufacture of lithium batteries, γ-butyrolactone is used as a special non-aqueous solution of lithium ions.
